Alpacas, domesticated South American camelids (Vicugna pacos), have been bred for their luxurious fiber for over 6,000 years. Descended from the vicuña, their fiber is globally renowned for being fine, strong (second only to silk), warm, comfortable, and light.

These animals, resembling small llamas, graze in herds at high altitudes (3,500 - 5,000 meters) in the Andes mountains. Unlike llamas, alpacas were bred specifically for their fiber, not as beasts of burden.

Alpaca fiber is used in various knitted and woven items such as blankets, sweaters, hats, gloves, scarves, and ponchos, particularly in South America.
